Greystanes Public School has a long and proud tradition of providing quality education to the children of our community.
Below is a timeline of significant events at Greystanes Public School.
Greystanes Public School – a timeline
1899
Application for the establishment of a school at Greystanes submitted – application deferred.
1900
- Prospect and Sherwood progress association make further representations to establish a school – application accepted.
- 2 acres of land acquired at a cost of $100.15 and a building erected 20 x 14 feet at a cost of $310.
1902
Greystanes Public School (known as 'The Harper Street School') opens its doors to students on 20 January 1902, with an initial enrolment of 9 students. Enrolments had increased to 55 students by the end of the first year.
1918
New school room built.
1929
Enrolments steady at approximately 60 students.
1948
By this time only one of the two classrooms was connected to electricity.
1952
Double timber classrooms built – currently used by the before and after school care centre.
1954
About 4 acres of land east of the school purchased, including a weather board dwelling, which later became the headmaster's residence. Now known as the park area.
1960s
Land in Greystanes released from government restrictions and sub-division begins. Enrolments steadily increased to:
- 1966 – 114 students
- 1967 – 134 students
- 1968 – 195 students
- 1969 – 222 students.
1965
Mothers sell lunches, prepared at the community hall, to students – later they moved to the original classroom after the community hall was destroyed by fire.
1968
- Brick building adjacent to Merrylands Road opened.
- School canteen built and opened.
1970
Land purchased to the west of the school – now the field area.
1972
Admin block and classrooms opened.
1973
Student enrolments at 737, an increase of 515 students in 4 years.
1974
- Major building program begins.
- Widemere Public School starts within the grounds of Greystanes Public School.
1975
- Widemere Public School moves to its present site.
- Principal's residence demolished – palm tree in park area marks site.
1976
School song written by staff member Mr Peter Davis.
1979-1980
Student enrolment peaks at 819 students in 28 classes.
1980
Original timber classroom and 1918 classroom demolished due to extensive white ant damage.
1988
'The Greystanes Story' written and edited by Mr H. M. Ambler, as a bicentennial project.
1980s and 1990s
Steady decline in student enrolments as the population in Greystanes ages.
2002
Greystanes Public School celebrates its centenary and a commemorative garden and pathway outside the administration building established.
2003
The old Boral site begins to be sub-divided, with an expected 1,500 homes upon completion.
2004
Student enrolments bottom at 352 students in 12 classes.
2005
Covered outdoor learning area build to on playground area adjacent to Merrylands Road, providing an all weather space and additional shade.
2006
Fixed play equipment installed in park playground with the aid of a federal grant.
2008
Multipurpose court erected in park area adjacent to Merrylands Road with the aid of a federal grant.
2009
- A year of building works with the construction of a covered outdoor learning area in the Kindergarten to Year 1 and Year 2 playground and covered walkways throughout the school.
- Building works begin on our B.E.R. school hall.
2010
School hall opens for use 27 August 2010.
2017
Planning for the new build project.
2018
Commencement of the new build project.
